Professor Kim Jong-ho, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital
Professor Kim Jong-ho of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea, received the Best Presentation Award at the “Division-based Latest Medical Technology Presentation Competition” held during the 2024 Korean Orthopaedic Association Spring Congress, which took place for three days starting April 18 at the Yeosu COEX Convention Center.
The title of the presentation was “Arthroscopy Using Optical Electronic Endoscopy Technology (AI-Based Hands-Free Arthroscopy).”
Professor Kim is jointly developing the related technology with Chi-Won Lee, CEO of MedInTech Co., Ltd., affiliated with the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI). He previously presented this technology at the Catholic University–KERI Promising Technology Joint Symposium held on November 21, 2023. By receiving the Best Presentation Award at the 2024 Spring Congress of the Korean Orthopaedic Association, the work was recognized for its originality and excellence from an orthopaedic perspective.
Professor Kim stated,
“In the field of abdominal surgery, robotic surgery has largely replaced conventional laparoscopic surgery, and its usefulness has been well proven. However, in joint surgery, there are still no robots being used to replace conventional arthroscopy. I believe this research and development represents an important stepping stone toward the development of robotic arthroscopy, and we aim to develop a next-generation arthroscopic surgery system that will provide greater convenience for surgeons and more effective treatment for patients.”
